Open Product groups > Automations, then open the affected automation. Check its status, Last run, and any error messages. The next step depends on what you find.
What you see | What to do |
|---|---|
Inactive | Select Activate when the source and settings are ready. |
Active, with an older last run | Active automations run every 60 minutes. Use Run now if you want to run it sooner. |
Running under Last run | A run is in progress. Allow it to finish before checking its groups. If it remains running unusually long, contact support with the automation type and when it started. |
Failed | Read the errors in Automation failed and needs your attention. Correct the cause before selecting Reactivate automation. |
Automations require Advanced or Premium. If you changed plans, check that your current plan includes automations.
For a Collections automation:
Check that the Shopify collection title starts with Collection name prefix, including its capitalization.
Keep a distinct collection name after the prefix. For example, use prefix Group: with collection Group: Linen shirt.
Check that the intended products actually belong to that collection. The rule matches collection names, not product titles.
For a Metafields automation:
Check that Grouping metafield is the intended product field.
For text grouping, related products need the same non-empty value.
For product-list grouping, check the product references connecting the intended products.
Use Reload metafields if a newly created definition is missing from the selector, and check that its type is supported by the setup guide.
Also check Skip groups with a single product. When enabled, it skips one-product groups and removes managed groups reduced to one eligible product. Products blocked by the group limit do not count as eligible. This setting is separate from Hide groups with only 1 swatch, which controls storefront display.
After correcting the source data, use Run now for an active automation, or Reactivate automation for a failed one.
An error naming a product, a group, and the maximum number of groups per product means that product could not be added to another group.
For this specific error, the automation skips the blocked addition and continues processing other products and groups. It still finishes with Failed status, so some groups may have updated even though the run reports a failure. Existing memberships are not removed to make space.
Choose which groups the product should belong to, then follow Choosing a group limit to remove unwanted assignments or increase the limit for intentional memberships. For automated groups, correct the source collection or metafield so the unwanted assignment is not recreated.
After fixing the memberships or limit, select Reactivate automation. Other errors can behave differently; a failed run alone does not establish which products were processed or guarantee that another run will succeed.
This is the number of products inside one group, not the number of groups a product belongs to. Reduce or split the products in the source collection or grouping data, then reactivate the automation. Increasing Maximum groups per product does not fix this error.
Allow the saved groups to finish syncing, then check theme installation and collection display for the affected page.
If the error or missing products remain unexplained, send support the exact error, whether the automation uses collections or metafields, and one example collection or product. Include a storefront URL if the groups exist but are not displayed.
Use Deactivate to stop future runs while keeping the groups already created. Deleting an automation also deletes its managed groups, so use deactivation when you only want to pause it.
